The Silent Woman 02–03

The Silent Woman 02–03

The Shakespeare Theatre’s Artistic Director Michael Kahn directs a Washington, D.C. premiere of this wicked and elaborate farced called by the poet John Dryden the “most perfectly plotted of all comedies.” Audiences will remember our production of Jonson’s Volpone, winner of two Helen Hayes Awards. The Silent Woman is the story of aptly-named Morose, an old bachelor with a severe aversion to noise, who marries a “silent woman” to deny his nephew a substantial inheritance. When the quiet lady turns out to be anything but, the stage is set for gender-bending and boisterous antics. With biting wit and sharp satire, Jonson considers what it means to be a man, to be a woman, indeed to be human, but without voice. A recent audience favorite as part of the Shakespeare Theatre’s ReDiscovery series, this play roars with delicious surprise.
